This year’s East Region Inter County Masters was held at Newmarket on November 12th. Only four Counties made it with both Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire not appearing, the gala is part of the larger National Inter Counties meet. The lead changed hands between Bedfordshire and Norfolk, with Norfolk finally winning by two points.
When the overall results were announced, Bedfordshire finished in the best ever position of 10th, beating such large Counties as Surrey and Lancashire.
In the Individual events, World record holder Lawrence Palmer (Putteridge) understandably won the 50 Breaststroke, and finished a creditable 3rd in the 50 Butterfly, in the 25 years age group.
British record holder Liz Woolner (Flitwick Dolphins) finished in first place in the 45 years 50 Butterfly, and there were two top five finishes for Claire Evelyn (South Beds Masters) in the 25 years age group, with a 5th place in the 50 Backstroke, and a fourth place in the 50 Butterfly. Also in the 25 years age group, Carla king (South Beds Masters) finished in fourth place in the 50 Freestyle.
The Counties overall improvement in its strength in depth was proven in the relays. Seven years ago, Bedfordshire did not have a single relay team with a top ten finish, but this year we had 10 of our relay teams finishing in the top ten, with two fourth places our best results, with the 100 years 200m Freestyle relay team of Claire Evelyn, Frances Merridan, Samantha Hammond (all south Beds Masters) and Lauren Grice (Leighton Buzzard), and the 140 years 200 Freestyle team of Liz Woolner (Flitwick Dolphins) Carla King, Claire Evelyn, Samantha Hammond (all south Beds Masters)
